Road Trip - Iceland - Fish Market

And now back to Iceland. I have a few more food experiences to share from our trip. This was our planned fancy, expensive dinner in Reykjavik at Fish Market.  The food was fresh, delicious and beautiful but if some of us had ordered differently we would have had a more memorable dinner.  

We considered trying the tasting menu but decided to each order an appetizer and a main or sushi platter. This was a mistake because it was just too much food but it was delicious.

First we were given an amuse bouche by the kitchen. It was tuna tartare on a wonton chip and it was a nice start to the meal. 

My appetizer was billed as king crab claws with chilli mayo served with freshly cut lemon wedge, but crab legs are what came out.

They were delicious but the portion was enormous. This would have been better split with the whole table as a first course.  

Another appetizer was steamed mussels in lobster broth with bonito flakes and chili. A success.

But the big winner in the appetizer course was deep fried rock shrimp in light tempura batter with sweet melon, jalapeno dressing and garlic sprouts.

This was crispy, spicy and delicious. Amazing.

For our main courses the most successful were the sushi platters. The sushi was fresh and delicious and the portions were a reasonable size.

There were two blends of sushi: nigiri, maki and sashimi. One large platter and one smaller. Beautiful.

Plus delicious Spider Maki: tempura soft shell crab cooked tempura, cucumber and daikon.

The sushi portions were perfect but the dish two of us ordered from the main course menu was just too much again.  It was langoustine tails grilled on the robata grill, served with garlic champagne sauce.

It tasted great but it was just a huge pile of langoustines. It would have been nicer to have a smaller portion with some starch on the side. Or, even better, order this, the crab "claws" and a few platters of sushi to share for the whole table.  

At the end of the meal we were too stuffed for dessert so we had delicious espressos.  

It was a lovely meal, expensive and filling, but the seafood was delicious and fresh. I would definitely recommend sharing these plates if you go.
